Unicyclists finish the 18 mile trip at Barnegat Light in the sunshine.

LBI Unithon 2001 Benefits ALO

The third LBI Unithon fund-raising event was a terrific success. About a dozen unicyclists road 18 miles from Holgate to Barnegat Light. Their tee shirts bore the slogan of the event, "Unicyclists riding to protect New Jersey's Coastal Environment". All proceeds from the unithon were donated to the Alliance for a Living Ocean. Corporate sponsors included Horizon Dairies ($1,000), Commerce Bank, and Walter's Bicycles. Unicycle.com donated a unicycle, and Shirra Stone donated a wave quilt to the raffle.

Bridget Sprouls of Sweetwater started the event two years ago. Her Mom gave a unicycle to her Dad as a joke for Christmas, but Bridget was the one in the family to become the unicyclist. Bridget, looking for a challenge, decided to ride the length of LBI. A friend convinced her to ride for a charity. The rest, as they say, is history.

The first rider to arrive at Barnegat Light State Park was David Bayley of Glen Ridge. It took David 2 and one half hours to complete the ride on his 43-inch tire. Shane Clark, 9, of Wyncote, PA was the youngest rider on the smallest unicycle with a 24-inch tire.

The President of ALO, Joan Koons, said that the money raised by the Unithon will go towards ALO's operating expenses. With the growth of ALO, Joan says, "Just the postage is getting up to an interesting figure".

ALO thanks everyone involved in the successful day!
