Surf Stewards

ALO’s Surf Stewards program is designed to bring the surf community together to support the cause of clean beaches, oceans, and waves. Surfers spend more time physically in the ocean than almost any other group around. They are what is known in science as an "indicator species." If there's something dangerous in the water, they're usually the first to know it.

In the past, ALO has reached out to the surf instructors on LBI, asking them to give a quick tutorial on how they can present a one minute environmental lesson in a one-hour surf lesson. This year, ALO is branching out and uniting the entire surf community. With the assistance of local surf shops and our friends at Jetty, we are asking all of the area’s surfers to sign our online Surf Stewards pledge:

“As a surfer, I pledge to keep the beach and ocean pristine by cleaning up trash when I check the surf and leave the beach, reducing my use of disposable products, and educating myself and others on the importance of being environmentally friendly.”

WAYS TO BE A SURF STEWARD

  • Leave the beach cleaner than you found it. Pack up your trash and pick up any garbage you see.
  • Every time you check the surf, pick up the litter by the dunes. If you just check four spots, that could mean a lot of clean beaches.
  • Dispose of garbage and recyclables properly.
  • When you’re at home, take a few minutes to learn about the marine life that resides in the ocean. Amazing creatures swim, crawl or anchor themselves in the same shallow waters you surf.
  • Keep plastics out of the line up by minimizing your usage of disposable containers, which are the most common items found washed up on the beach. Each year hundreds of thousands of sea creatures (whales, sea turtles, birds, etc.) die from ingesting plastic pieces.
  • Get yourself a reusable water bottle and fill it up from the tap to stay hydrated between sessions.
  • Download our Surf Steward brochure.
