Issues & Campaigns

Over the years, ALO has tackled many different issues and we evolve as times change. Our main goal is affecting change on Long Beach Island and the adjacent mainland to protect the diverse ecosystems of the Atlantic,
Barnegat Bay, and the rest of our coastal area.

Of course, we are aware of and concerned about bigger issues. Consider us the place to start. We ALL have to start somewhere. Collective action literally changes the world.

Many environmental issues are bigger than we are and some of things that need to be addressed exceed our reach. For these, we support and partner with other groups that align with our core mission. Please check out the additional links to find out more about some great organizations.

For 2010, ALO is focusing on the specific issues below. They are separate but related. Solve one and we make strides in solving others.

The all encompassing issue is “non-point source pollution.” The two major components of which are greatly affecting our area:

  • Litter
  • Nitrogen

Other factors include reducing the use of plastic. (See also our plastic cap program.)

We have recently testified at public hearings against liquefied natural gas (LNG) drilling off our coast, the problems with Oyster Creek nuclear plant, and in favor of a fertilizer ordinance in Stafford Township.

These are currently our most active campaigns, in addition to one of our main goals which is public education. One of the best things you can do for the environment is to share your knowledge. See our summer programs for more details.
