On July 20, 2000, ALO Bay Watch Monitors, John Sly, John Smath and Don Launer, hosted students from the Governor's School. This is the second year that the monitors have participated in this program.

Fifteen students, many of whom had never been aboard a boat before, and one who had never seen the ocean, went out on Barnegat Bay to do water sampling as part of their ecology studies. Along with their teacher from Stockton College, the students went aboard a typical Barnegat Bay garvey, belonging to John Sly, and a two-masted schooner belonging to Don Launer. After returning to dockside the water samples were measured and documented and an informal water ecology discussion took place. The enthusiasm of the students was refreshing.

The Governor's school is a unique honors program for talented students in their junior and senior years of high school who want to explore new and exciting avenues of knowledge during a four-week summer session. The program, supported by the State of New Jersey, includes tuition, room and board. Participants are picked from all over the state.
