We are looking for a interns for the Summer of 2004

ALO's summer programs run Monday through Friday from July 5 to August 20, 2004, and there are also several special programs throughout the summer. ALO interns are unpaid, however, they can earn college credits for their internship. Contact ALO's Assistant Program Coordinator, Judi Hartney and your college advisor or preceptor to work out the details. Deadline for summer internship applications is Friday, May 14, 2004 or until the positions are filled. The description of the 6 positions available are shown below.

**POSITION: Presenter, Educator, Stories by the Sea, Mondays, 10:30 to 11:30 pm, July 5 to August 16, 2004

INTERESTS OR MAJOR PREFERRED: Elementary Education with knowledge of the environment.

JOB DESCRIPTION: ALO is looking for an education intern to write lesson plans for Stories by the Sea, a 1-hour program for 3 to 7 year olds. The intern would coordinate volunteers to carry out the lesson plans and evaluate the effectiveness of the lesson. The intern should also be available for our FantaSea Festival on Saturday, August 1 to work with children's education programs. The intern could work on other summer education programs with staff, interns and volunteers.

NECESSARY SKILLS OR REQUIREMENTS: Ability to write, implement and assess lesson plans, ability to work with 3 to 7 years olds, good communication skills and ability to supervise the involvement of volunteers in the lesson plan.

HOURS: minimum 5 hours per week (We can tailor the hours to your internship requirements.)


**Position Facilitator, Environmentalist, Inherit the Earth, Tuesdays, 8:30 am to 2:00 pm on July 6, to August 17, 2004.

INTERESTS OR MAJOR PREFERRED: Communications, Environmental Science, Marine Sciences,Biology

JOB DESCRIPTION: We are seeking an intern on Tuesdays, 8:30 AM to 2 PM on July 13, July 27 and August 10, 2004 to oversee weekly bus trips to various environmental destinations and give environmental talks along the way and July 6, July 20, August 3 and August 17 to work with our "Seining Day" where participants have the opportunity to participate in seining at the bay. The intern must be available for our FantaSea Festival on Sunday, August 1, 2004 to work with children's programs. The intern could also work on other summer education programs with staff, interns and volunteers.

NECESSARY SKILLS OR REQUIREMENTS: good communication and organizational skills, interest in and knowledge of the environment

HOURS: minimum 7 hours per week (We can tailor the hours to your internship requirements.)


**POSITION: Presenter, Environmental Educator, Eco-Tour, Wednesdays, 8:30 to 12:30 from July 7 to August 18, 2004.

INTERESTS OR MAJOR PREFERRED: Communications, Environmental Science, Marine Sciences, Biology

JOB DESCRIPTION: The intern would oversee weekly trips, including setting up supplies for trips and acting as a tour guide. The trips alternate on Long Beach Island each week (north of the Causeway then south of the Causeway) and visit environmentally sensitive areas. The intern must be available for our FantaSea Festival on Sunday, August 1, 2004 to work with children's programs. The intern could also work on other summer education programs with staff, interns and volunteers.

NECESSARY SKILLS OR REQUIREMENTS: strong knowledge of coastal & marine biology, good communication skills and ability to work with others

HOURS: minimum 5 hours per week (We can tailor the hours to your internship requirements.)

**POSITION: Marine Science, Outreach, Twilight at the Bay, Thursday evenings, 5:30 to 8:30PM from July 8 to August 19, 2004, and at special events throughout the summer.


INTERESTS OR MAJORS PREFERRED: Marine Science, strong marine biology background

JOB DESCRIPTION: We are looking for an intern to set up and present our 'Look and Learn' Tank. Activities include, but are not limited to seining in Barnegat Bay, setting up our aquarium (the 'Look & Learn' tank), explaining your 'finds' to adults and children. The intern should be available for our FantaSea Festival on Saturday, August 1 to work with children's education programs. The intern could also work on other summer education programs with staff, interns and volunteers.

NECESSARY SKILLS OR REQUIREMENTS: Ability to seine, strong knowledge of marine biology, good communication skills and ability to coordinate volunteers and present to people of all ages.

HOURS: Minimum 5 hours per week (We can tailor the hours to your internship requirements.)


**POSITION: Facilitator, Twilight at the Bay, Thursday evenings, 5:30 to 8:30 PM from July 8 to August 19, 2004

JOB DESCRIPTION: We are looking for an intern to set up program, act as the Master of Ceremonies and coordinate volunteers to present educational information and organize children's games. The intern should be available for our FantaSea Festival on Saturday, August 2 to work with children's education programs. The intern could also work on other summer education programs with staff, interns and volunteers.

NECESSARY SKILLS OR REQUIREMENTS: Good communication skills, ability to be master of ceremonies, ability to coordinate volunteers, knowledge of the environment

HOURS: Minimum 5 hours per week (We can tailor the hours to your internship requirements.)


POSITION: Education, Presenter, Inlet Lore, Friday from 10:30 to 12:30 from July 9 to August 20, 2004

INTERESTS OR MAJORS PREFERRED: Communications, Environmental Science, Marine Science, Biology

JOB DESCRIPTION: We are looking for an intern to present our program at the Barnegat Lighthouse State Park in Barnegat Light. The program includes interactive audience participation and an explanation of ALO's water quality monitoring program. ALO explains the unique environment where the mighty Atlantic Ocean meets the Barnegat Bay. The intern should also be available for our FantaSea Festival on Saturday, August 2 to work with children's education programs. The intern could also work on other summer education programs with staff, interns and volunteers.

NECESSARY SKILLS OR REQUIREMENTS: good communication skills, knowledge of marine environment and ability to work with others, self-motivated

HOURS: minimum 3 hours per week (We can tailor the hours to your internship requirements.)

POSITION: Various - All Semesters

INTERESTS OR MAJORS PREFERRED: All majors, especially environmental education, marine sciences, biology, students with a strong environmental education

JOB DESCRIPTION: ALO is a grass roots non-profit environmental organization located on Long Beach Island. Our mission is "to promote and maintain clean water and a healthy coastal environment through education, research and active participation. We recognize the need to manage our watershed, bay and ocean holistically since all water flows from "the raindrop to the ocean." ALO's programs run throughout the year and include preparation of materials, props to present our programs, and prepare materials to advertise our programs. Internships can be tailored to individual student's requirements. These projects, however, must advance ALO's mission. (To be determined by ALO supervisor and the internship director from the student's school.)

NECESSARY SKILLS OR REQUIREMENTS (varies by project): Knowledge of the environment, good communications skills, knowledge of advertising, ability to work with others.
