Get Trashy (by keeping it clean)

“Get Trashy, by keeping it clean – PICK UP 4 OR MORE” is ALO’s campaign against litter. Marine litter is a preventable problem and at least 80% of it comes from land.

Any debris on the streets winds up in the ocean and affects fish, sea critters, marine mammals and birds. 1,000,000's — yes MILLIONS —die each year from the eating of or entanglement in plastic.

In the Pacific Ocean there is a gyre filled with plastics. The “Great Pacific Garbage Patch” is estimated to be TWICE THE SIZE OF TEXAS. It was discovered about 10 years ago, and in early 2010, researchers found another swirl of plastic debris – this time in the Atlantic. There are BILLIONS of pieces of plastics in this mess of garbage that is estimated to cover an area roughly the distance from Virginia to Cuba.

OF COURSE, we should all dispose of our trash and recyclables properly, but some people don't. So, ALO is asking everyone to "pick up 4 or more" pieces of trash any time you are out and about and see it lying around. There are more than 100,000 visitors to LBI each year, if everyone did this – IMAGINE THE DIFFERENCE IT WOULD MAKE.

If you still don’t think that litter is a problem, visit Ocean Conservancy’s Website for details on the 2009 International Coastal Cleanup in which ALO participated -400,000 people picked up 4.8 MILLION pounds of debris around the world. Plus check out ALO’s clean up results here.

When in Ship Bottom, be sure to stop by ALO headquarters to buy an original “Get Trashy” t-shirt.
