Nitrogen and the Bay

What you can do when it comes to Nitrogen and phosphorus runoff
- Planting indigenous grass, trees, and shrubs in bare areas is one of the most important things you can do to reduce nonpoint source runoff.
- Test soil to determine if you even need to fertilize.
- If you must fertilize use slow release, water insoluble and/or organic. Keep it off hard surfaces and away from storm drains.
- Do not apply pesticides or fertilizers before or during rain due to the strong likelihood of runoff.
- Become a “Barnegat Bay Buddy”
What ALO has done
- Testified at a public hearing in Stafford that led to the precedent-setting passage of the first local ordinance on fertilizer application.
- Contacted every governing body on the Island to urge them to follow suit.
To date all towns but Barnegat Light have approved some kind of ordinance.
