News - 2011 Volunteers Needed - Sept 17, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Just show up and clean up!! ALO leaders will be stationed in the following locations and provide all supplies. Holgate: End of Bay Ave OVER THE PAST 25 YEARS, Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) has become the world’s largest volunteer effort for ocean health. Nearly nine million volunteers from 152 countries and locations have cleaned 145 million pounds of trash from the shores of lakes, streams, rivers, and the ocean on just one day each year. ALO is your local steward for Ocean Conservancy, and hosts the ICC each year. Ocean Conservancy has recorded every item found, which gives a clear picture of the manufactured items impacting the health of humans, wildlife, and economies. As its 2011 report demonstrates, the body of data from the ICC has inspired action to rid the ocean of harmful trash. Read the full report (pdf). A few facts from Ocean Conservancy: Marine debris kills Join forces for a clean, healthy ocean In 2009, 60 percent of the debris collected and cataloged consisted of single-use, disposable items. Volunteers picked up 1.1 million plastic bags. And enough cups, plates, knives, forks, and spoons for a picnic for 100,000 people.
Surf Stewards Ride Again
“Learning to surf can be one of the most exciting things you do on LBI. Many times it becomes a health, lifelong passion. While everyone has to have a hand in working toward a healthy environment, surfers often take on an important role in keeping our oceans clean. We are the stewards of the surf.” This is the theme and commitment behind the “Long Beach Island Surf Stewards Program,” organized by the Alliance for a Living Ocean (ALO), led by ALO volunteer, freelance writer, and surfer Jon Coen, and sponsored by Patagonia—whose mission it is to: “Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.” For the second year, the program was held at ALO headquarters in Ship Bottom on June 22 and was presented to local surf instructors. They, in turn, present the message of Surf Stewards during their lessons throughout the season and reach 100s of people. Click here to download a PDF of the Surf Stewards brochure. SAVE THE DATE! Earth-Day Cleanup, April 30, 2011
Please join us for ALO’s 18th Annual Earth-Day cleanup. There will be lots of fun activities to go along with the cleanup, plus cool shirts from our partners at Jetty. It’s a great opportunity for individuals and groups to make a huge difference locally. Groups can pre-sign up by calling or emailing the office at 609-494-7800 or alolbi@verizon.net. More details to come. ALO board member Lori Castle (not in photo) was walking the beach with friends and family in late Feb. and picked up any garbage along the way. When her brother grabbed what he thought was a small piece of net, everyone was surprised when it did not budge. It took both Mike and Sean (pictured) to dig out a giant net from the sand and drag it up to the walkway for disposal. The net was filled with hooks, sinkers, plastic and other debris.

It doesn’t cost you a thing; in fact, it SAVES you money. It’s green power, so it saves the planet. Plus, ALO receives a donation for every person that signs up. Again, it does not cost you a thing. How For every switch, ALO receives a donation and a residual check each month for every active customer. It’s that simple! You must use this link for ALO to get credit for your switch: www.viridian.com/alo4greenpower Utility companies simply deliver energy, they don’t produce it. By default they purchase electricity at higher rates than you actually have to pay. This is listed as “basic generation service” (BGS) on your bill under “supply charges.” It takes a couple of minutes to change suppliers and there are no new contracts, fees, or cancellation charges. The only thing you will notice about the change is a lower bill. We suggest you choose the “20%” option. Please sign up – save money, support ALO, save the planet!
